Icheri Sheher is a historic district located in the center of Baku, which is one of the main attractions of the city and one of the most beautiful old towns in the Caucasus. The ancient city was founded in the 12th century and has more than a thousand years of history.
Icheri Sheher is a fine example of medieval urban planning and architecture. The district is surrounded by fortress walls, which were built in the 16th century and are one of the symbols of Baku. The walls are about 12 kilometers long and consist of two rows – an inner and outer one. The walls have been remarkably preserved to this day.
Inside the Icheri Sheher, there are numerous historical buildings and monuments, including the Maiden Tower - the symbol of Baku, the Caravanserai - a trading center built in the 18th century, the Baku State Acropolis - a fortress located on top of a hill, which offers a stunning view of the city and the Caspian Sea, as well as many narrow streets and squares, where you can take a walk and enjoy the atmosphere of the old city.
Icherei Sheher is also a place where ancient traditions and customs are preserved. Here, one can try the Baku cuisine and visit craft workshops, where local masters work on pottery, metal forging, jewelry-making, and more.
Icheri Sheher is not only a tourist attraction, but also a living historic district where local residents still live and preserve the traditions and customs of old Baku. There is no better place for an authentic walk around the city.
