Fortress in Acre or The Fortress of the Knights Hospitaller, also known as the Temple Complex of St. John, was one of the main fortresses of the Crusaders in the Holy Land during the Crusades. Today, it is a significant tourist destination in the northern part of Israel, a filming location for movies about knights, and an inspiration for creating locations in games about mythical assassins.
The fortress was built in the 12th century after the Crusaders captured Acre in 1104. It became the main stronghold of the Crusaders on the Eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea, and its defense became an important task for the Crusaders.
The fortress was surrounded by strong walls and had numerous towers and fortress gates. It was located on a high cliff right by the sea, which made it difficult to capture. Additionally, it had its own water source and could withstand a long siege.
The fortress was the site of fierce battles for several centuries, and its control often changed hands between the Crusaders, Muslims, and other invaders. In 1187, the fortress was captured by Sultan Saladin after several months of siege, and it became one of the biggest defeats for the Crusaders in the Holy Land.
Fortress in Acre remained under Muslim control until the end of the 19th century when it was captured by British forces during the Palestine War of 1917. Today, the fortress in Acre is open for visitors and has become one of the main tourist attractions in Israel.
