Naples is often referred to as the city of gates. Firstly, because it is located on a peninsula that looks like a gate opening into the Mediterranean Sea. The city has also served as an important trading point for centuries, as if serving as a gateway between the East and the West. Secondly, Naples has 9 historic gates that were built in different periods of its history. These legendary "nine gates of Naples" are mentioned in old songs and are considered a symbol of the city. In my opinion, the Gates of Nola are one of the most interesting in this list.
Porta Nolana (Nolana Gate) is one of the oldest gates of Naples, which was built during the Roman Empire. Initially, they were called Porta Vesuvio, in honor of the nearby Mount Vesuvius. In the Middle Ages, the gate received its current name, which comes from the ancient Roman city of Nola, located a few kilometers from Naples.
Porta Nolana has two towers and two entrances, located on the southern side of the city in the Santa Lucia district. It was one of the main entry points to the city, used for both trade and defense. In the Middle Ages, this part of the city was one of the most dangerous areas, so Porta Nolana had significant strategic value.
The towers of Porta Nolana are called "Torre del Carmine" and "Torre del Normanno". "Torre del Carmine" is located on the north side of the gate and has a square shape. It is the larger of the two towers and stands at a height of about 30 meters. "Torre del Normanno" is located on the south side of the gate and has a round shape. It is slightly smaller in size, standing at a height of about 20 meters.
Both towers were built at different times. "Torre del Carmino" was built in the 13th century and was used as a barracks and a prison during different periods of its history. "Torre del Normanno" was built later, in the 14th century, and served for storing weapons and defensive equipment.
The Nolan Gate towers are now listed as historical monuments of Naples and are popular attractions for tourists and researchers of history and architecture. From the top of the towers, there is a beautiful view of the city, and inside, there are museum exhibitions dedicated to the history of the gates and the city as a whole.
Porta Nolana is one of the main attractions of the city. It is conveniently located near a metro station and bus stop, making this area very accessible for tourists. The gates also serve as a venue for various cultural events and festivals, including the celebration the City Day of Napleswhich is celebrated annually in September.
